Demonstration Project Launched in Bangkok for Motorcycle Taxi Battery Subscription Service
— Leveraging SCiB™ Cells with Long-Life Performance in High Temperatures to Unlock Emerging Markets —

Background
In hot regions such as Thailand, batteries in two- and three-wheelers degrade rapidly, often requiring costly replacement within 1–2 years. Safety issues, including fire incidents, have also hindered adoption. With global demand for lithium-ion batteries projected to exceed 600 GWh in emerging markets by 2035, long-life and safe solutions are urgently needed. By addressing these issues, Toshiba and naturenix seek to unlock the significant potential of the two- and three-wheeler battery market.Demonstration Overview
Through its local JV, Windy International in Bangkok, naturenix is providing a battery swapping service for drivers. The project tests SCiB™ cells, sensors, communication features, and AI-based analytics, along with driver surveys, to validate readiness for commercialization by FY2025. CO₂ emissions monitoring is also included to quantify environmental impact reduction.Technical Advantages
Toshiba’s SCiB™ cells offer more than 20,000 cycles with high safety, even under high temperatures. They are resistant to abnormal heating or ignition in the event of internal short circuits. naturenix’s pack and charging technology minimizes resistance and heat, enabling longer life, higher power output, and rapid charging (targeting as little as six minutes). Equipped with communication and AI analytics, the packs enable continuous monitoring, accurate degradation prediction, and repurposing for stationary storage after vehicle use.Business Model
naturenix provides batteries to drivers via fleet operators on a subscription basis. This lowers upfront vehicle costs for mobility manufacturers and makes electrification more affordable for drivers. For Toshiba, the model creates recurring revenue through rental, complementing traditional battery sales.Roles of Toshiba and naturenix
Toshiba supplies SCiB™ cells, while naturenix develops and manufactures the packs. Together, they plan to co-manage assets, systems, and subscription services.Future Outlook
Based on this demonstration, Toshiba and naturenix aim to launch a full-scale battery subscription service for motorcycle taxi drivers in FY2026, with plans to extend the model to forklifts and other industrial equipment. The companies will continue building an integrated service that combines mobility and energy infrastructure.Toshiba Press Release — October 31, 2024
